Dawn began raising rabbits in 1985. The herd had a few Holland Lops in it, but the primary focus of the herd was commercial. The breeding stock meeting the commercial goals was the New Zealand White (NZW) then, and this breed remains the leading commercial stock today.
 The herd today combines the abilities of both the NZW and the American Chinchilla (AC) to meet the needs of the commercial rabbit industry. We have purebred lines of each breed, with the NZW occupying most of the hutches, and a carefully managed crossbreeding program. The crossbreeding program selects for the best of both breeds.
 The AC was introduced into the herd for its excellent disposition. The AC fulfills the needs of the commercial market in all respects except that its pelt is not white. However, the benefits resulting from its disposition that it brings to the herd far outweigh its lack of white pelt. We believe so strongly (and have seen it work in our cattle herd), that disposition plays a vital role in animal husbandry. Calm mothers breed back more eagerly and are not disturbed by humans in the rabbitry or by human handling. They are not nervous and therefore deliver more live kits. Calm mothers have fewer problems with milk production, again due to absence of nervousness. Disposition is not everything, but fortunately, the AC brings all other necessary traits for the commercial industry as well.
